Christmas lights? And the Christmas tree would look barren without Christmas tree lights. Christmas tree are an essential as they give it a festive, scintillating décor.
Traditionally Christmas tree were kindled with small candles, dates back to at least the middle of the XVIIth century. However, it took two centuries this tradition to become widely established first in Germany and soon spreading to Eastern Europe. Candles for the tree were glued with melted wax to a tree branch or attached by pins. They were often a cause of tragic fires in many homes. Around 1890, candleholders were first used for Christmas candles. Between 1902 and 1914, small lanterns and even glass balls to hold the candles started being used.
In 1882, three years after the incandescent light bulb was invented, the first Christmas tree was lit by the use of electricity. Edward Johnson, a friend of Thomas Edison, lighted up a real Christmas tree in New York City with hand-wired 80 red, white and blue hand-blown bulbs and strung them around a rotating evergreen tree. Edward Johnson was the first person to create a string of electric Christmas lights that were then mass produced around 1890. By 1900, department stores started using the new Christmas lights for their Christmas displays.
In today's hi-tech times, everything has taken a new dimension. Even lighting devices are now based on various new technologies. The incandescent light bulbs and LEDs are the most basic lighting devices that are very commonly used. These are generally linked in parallel series that are powered from the mains without a transformer. The neon lamp based strings are also connected in parallel with each lamp having it's own current-limiting resistor. Basically all the lights that are powered by batteries are wired parallelly. The other kind of set up is the light bulb or LED-based strings connected parallelly with line isolation down transformer. Although these are much safer to use in homes but at the end of the string, there is a voltage drop.
The most latest in lighting devices is the one based on fiber optic technology. Mostly they are fitted into an artificial Christmas tree. Such artificial Christmas trees have numerous fiber optic wires that go from the tree to the leaves and the tree base usually has LEDs or light bulbs.Other types of Christmas lights that are available are Battery Operated Lights, Bubble Lights, Icicle Lights, Fiber Optic, Mini-Lights, Net Lights, Novelty Lights and Rope Lights.
