Merry Christmas

We wish you a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year! Whenever we want to wish somebody on an occasion we say "Happy Birthday", "Happy Anniversary", "Happy Thanksgiving", etc but why do all the greetings on Christmas say "Merry Christmas"?The word Chrsitmas is a translation of the Old English word christe maesse meaning the

Mass of Christ. The present day definitions of the word "merry" means gay, cheerful or festive, however, when the saying Merry Christmas first came about, the widely accepted meaning of the word was peaceful or blessed. Thus, wishing someone a Merry Christmas was wishing him or her a blessed or peaceful Mass of Christ.

Though Christmas has been celebrated since the 4th century AD, the first known usage of any Christmastime greeting, "Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year" was in an informal letter written by an English admiral in 1699. The same phrase appeared in the first Christmas card, produced in 19th century England. The then relatively new term "Merry Christmas" figured prominently in Charles Dickens' A Christmas Carol in 1843 and some give credit to Dickens for popularising, or even originating the phrase "Merry Christmas".

"Merry Christmas" is the most common greeting during Christmas all around the world except for the people of Judaism faith wish "Happy Holidays" as they do not view Jesus Christ as the son of God, so they don't celebrate christmas as the christians do. So, wishing someone "Merry Christmas" is to wish that person a have fun-filled and joyous holiday!
