Following the advice of her singer-sister, Ashley went to Los Angeles at the age of 23, where she got almost an immediate agency contract. She was a drama student at Playhouse West School and Repertory Theater in the early 90's.
Ashley got a movie part at her first audition, in "Kuffs" and after that she was showered with title roles in "Ruby in Paradise", for which she also received a New York Film Critics Circle award for the Best female lead and Sundance Film Festival Independent Spirit award. Ashley has been a part of numerous television shows, such as, "Star Trek: The Next Generation", and "Sisters", and also in the TV movie "Till Death Do Us Part". She got an Emmy nomination and a Golden Globe nomination for her portrayal of Marilyn Monroe in "Norma Jean and Marilyn".
