Completing his school, Boetticher went to Mexico and got a job of a technical adviser in the romantic Blood and Sand (1941).Boetticher got an astounding opportunity to learn the art of film making from the works of film directors like Roube Mamoulian and editor Barbara McLean.
After assisting for several years as a studio messenger and assistant director, he was give the chance to direct the first retakes of other films and also his own low-budget projects. In the year 1951, Boetticher did his first significant direction for producer John Wayne, Bullfighter and the Lady. This film was based on his past experiences in Mexico.
Boetticher 's career as a director went through a number of hurdles and unfruitful projects after which he alligned with actor Randolph Scott, producer Harry Joe and writer Burt Kennedy. This alliance resulted in the making of some of the most unforgettable films in the Hollywood Film Industry which includes films like Seven Men from Now, The Tall T, The Rise and Fall of Legs Diamond. He then left for Mexico with his wife Debra Paget to film a monumental documentary Carlos Arruza. Carlos Arruza was an exquisite piece of documentary entailing the seven years of Arruza's life that passed through illness, detention in jail, divorce, mental asylum and finally culminated in his accidental death.
The film Arruza was a challenging project and its success only went to prove the phenomenal talent of Boetticher as a director. Boetticher has divorced four times and has been known to have an affair with many eminent woman of his times like Karen Steele, Elsa Cardenas, Emily Erskine Cook, Debra Paget and his most recent wife Mary Chelde. Thereafter, Boetticher did a number of other films and documentaries before he died at the age of 85.
