Coen Brothers bought a camera by saving their pocket money. Their only aim in life was to become Filmmakers. The Coen Brothers used to remake the movies they saw in the television. Joel finished his studies from New York University and his brother Ethan went to study at the Princeton University. In the university days Joel became a celebrity there by making a movie called Soundings. After completing his graduation from the New York University Joel started his film making career working in various commercial films and music videos. He also worked with Sam Raimi as an assistant director in the box office hit movie Evil Dead. Joel and his brother Ethan have married respectively to actress Frances McDormand and the film editor Tricia Cooke.
The most important feature of The Coen Brothers' works as Filmmakers is their own style of production which has almost given birth to a new genre in the entertainment world. Their works mingle dry humor with shocking visuals as well as sharp irony. The Coen Brothers are very fond of the works like the screwball comedies made during the 30s and 40s. They belong the group of very few Filmmakers who have successfully retained the flavor of that old genre. That is why their films like The Hudsucker Proxy and Intolerable Cruelty express the same attitude that was denoted by that old genre.
The old America has recurrently made its come back as the theme of The Coen Brothers' movies. Films like O Brother, Where Art Thou? Was shot in the plot of the good old Mississippi. The soundtrack of the movie was full of bluegrass music. The major historical events of America are also depicted in The Coen Brothers' movies. As for example Miller's Crossing shows the time during prohibition, The Big Lebowski features the time during the gulf war, Burton Fink shows the effects of the attack on Pearl Harbor, and O Brother Where Art Thou? depicts the time of the Great Depression. Another important movie The Man Who Wasn't There is set to plot of World War II.
Apart from all the camera techniques The Coen Brothers' films are full of violence. Actually their motive has always been to portray reality in their films. Films like The Hudsucker Proxy and The Ladykillers show violence and the dark sides of life. The use of dark humor in these works are also stunning.
