Elizabeth Ashley

Elizabeth Ashley, one of the most exciting characters in Hollywood with a variety of facets to her life and career have come a long way from being a model and then debuting in 'The Highest Tree' in 1959 (with the name Elizabeth Cole). Later she came to be known as Ashley since her first breakthrough stage appearance in Take Her, She's Mine in 1961. This role won her the Theatre World Award. Elizabeth Ashley carried forward her victorious beginning with her performance as Corrie Bratter in Neil Simon's Barefoot in the Park (1963). In 1963 she made her film debut as Monica Winthrop in The Carpetbaggers (1963). She co-starred with her then husband George Peppard in the movie. Ashley had quit acting for five years after the 1965 film Ship of Fools. She brought out her autobiography Actress: Postcards From the Road in 1978. She had refused to act in the film version of Barefoot in the Park led to a professional freeze out for her. In 1970 she reinvented herself as an actress and by this time her acting had taken a harsh turn or edge, and this, in the long run had a beneficial impact on her career. She appeared as Maggie in the 1974 Broadway resurgence of Cat on a Hot Tin Roof and this completed her comeback.

She was also seen as the husky-voiced Aunt Frieda on the TV sitcom Evening Shade from 1990-94. She had made her TV debut in the 1960 TV show 'The Dupont Show of the Month' and she also did celebrity player turns on such game shows as 'Password'. To add to her credit she guest hosted NBC's 'Saturday Night Live' in 1982. In 1971 she made her TV movie debut with 'Harpy' and eventually she also appeared in NBC soap opera 'Another World' for a short period in 1990,but her most extensive work in TV identifies her as the member of the ensemble of 'Evening Shade' for four seasons.
