Her film career technically began in 1937 with the films like Oh Doctor and Stage Door. She played the supporting actress as Joan Crawford's pal in 1945 movie Mildred Pierce and got the Academy Award nomination for the Best Supporting Actress. Few of her other movies are, Anatomy of a Murder and Marx Brothers film At the Circus. She was a regular on Danny Kaye's zany comedy-variety show in 1946 which was short-lived but memorable and she earned the role of the Madison High School English teacher Connie Brooks in Our Miss Brooks. She became an honorary member of the National Education Association, and got an award from the Teachers College of Connecticut's Alumni Association.
Eve also won the radio listeners' poll by Radio Mirror magazine where she was voted as the top ranking comedienne of 1948-1949, but her attempts to launch The Eve Arden Show was foiled after few episodes. She also co-starred in the 1967-1969 situation comedy The Mothers-in-Law with Kaye Ballard. In Hello, Dolly! she was one of the many stars and she won the Sarah Siddons Award for her contributions in Chicago theatre. In 1985 she brought out her Autobiography, Three Phases of Eve through St. Martin's Press. She played the role of harassed Principal McGee in 1978's Grease and 1982's Grease 2 and simultaneously made appearances in television shows as Alice and Falcon Crest.
She also featured as the wicked stepmother in the Faerie Tale Theatre production of Cinderella in 1985. Arden received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame at 6714 Hollywood Boulevard and in 1995 she was introduced to the Radio Hall of Fame. At the age of 82 she died of advanced colorectal cancer and heart disease at her home in Los Angeles.
