Joan Chen became a celebrity in the Chinese world of entertainment when she performed in Zhang Zheng's Little Flower in the year 1979. She acted in the role of a revolutionary's daughter. The plot of the film was set in the pre-Maoist China. She was soon declared as the "Elizabeth Taylor of China" in the Times Magazine.
