John Carpenter's educational life began in Western Kentucky University but soon he was transferred to cherish his dream studies in University of Southern California's School of Cinematic Arts. Although it is true that he did not finish his studies there but his school projects were really appreciable.The life of John Carpenter as a filmmaker began professionally with the film titled as Dark Star which was actually a science-fictional black comedy. The story writing was done by John Carpenter along with his friend Dan O'Bannon.
O'Bannon was the person who successfully made the special effects in the movie. The next film of John Carpenter was Assault on Precinct 13. this low budget film was released in the year 1976. At first the film was not that much commercially successful in the US, but when released in England, it proved to be a huge hit. It was released in England in the London Film Festival and made John Carpenter a celebrity in all over Europe. Halloween was a great film by John Carpenter. This gave a new dimension in the slasher film genre. This movie was released in the year 1978. This was the time, according to John Carpenter, when Hollywood understood that horror films do not only mean haunted house movies.
John Carpenter has made many commercially successful movies of his genre. After the huge success of Halloween John Carpenter made films like The Fog, Tales from the Crypt and The crawling Eye. In 1983 John Carpenter made a film on Stephen King's novel Christine. 1984 saw him making such a great film like Starman. This film was highly praised the critics but it did not give John Carpenter such a commercial success. So in 1986 he moved on to make a big budget action comedy film like Big Trouble in Little China which was far away from John Carpenter had produced throughout his career as a filmmaker.
He returned to the world of horror movies with low budget productions like Prince of Darkness. The work of this film was actually a result of the inspiration he got after watching the BBC production Quatemass. During the 2000s John Carpenter has concentrated more on remaking his old works as well as Hollywood classics. In 2005 he remade his films Assault on Precint 13 and The Fog. His fans in USA are happy that he has come back to his genre and making the old things new by adding new dimensions to them.
