Though he was credited on Star Wars III, though he never filmed any scenes but George Lucas credited him out of loyalty. In 1983's Return of the Jedi Baker played an additional role as Paploo, the Ewok who stole an Imperial speeder bike. Originally he was going to play Wicket W. Warrick but he fell ill. His other well known films are, The Elephant Man, Time Bandits, Amadeus and Jim Henson's Labyrinth. Baker's costume as R2-D2 had a special seat, and he used to rock the torso from side to side, and used to perform certain head turns activates lights, and executes other gestures that gave R2-D2 his personality.
Baker started his career at the age of 16 as he joined Burton Lester's Midgets. He had given performances as a DJ, a circus clown and shadow ringmaster, and toured in pantomime and ice shows and also formed his own musical comedy act, The Mini Tones. Baker had also performed in night clubs before going to movies. Baker also featured in few other films like U.F.O, Sleeping Beauty, Labyrinth, Amadeus, Flash Gordon, and The Goodies, and in TV films like Prince Caspian and the Voyage of the Dawn Treader and The Hunchback of Notre Dame. Baker as R2-D2 put his footprints in the cement in 1978 outside Mann's Chinese Theater in Hollywood.
