In 1991 came his well received film Late for Dinner in which he play the character of a man who is trying to restate his life that remained stagnant for 29 years. Then came A Midnight Clear which was a World War II drama based on William Wharton's novel. Berg gave a brilliant performance in his subsequent films like A Case for Murder, Rise and Walk: The Dennis Byrd Story and The Last Seduction.
In 1955, Berg joined the CBS medical drama- Chicago Hope and became a regular cast for that season. Berg 's writing career also got a start in the one act play Miles and Mickey which made a debut in Los Angeles. Later, Furious George, his first screenplay was sold to Paramount. Simultaneously, he wrote two episodes of Chicago Hope.
Berg also did Spike Lee's Girl 6 and The Great White Hype, both in the year of 1996.The year that followed, saw him appearing in films like Cop Land also starring Sylvester Stallone. Finally then, he gave his writer-director debut in Very Bad Things casting such popular stars as Christian Slater and Cameron Diaz. Berg returned to his TV series but this time as a producer and creator of ABC'S Wonderland.
Berg wanted to try out the big screen assignments and it wasn't surprising that as a director he had a number of successful films to boast about like The Rundown in 2003 and Friday Night Lights in 2004.The latter was an outcome of a collaboration with Berg 's cousin, author Buzz Bissinger. The movie was itself based on Bissinger's 1990's novel about a football championship season. It goes without saying that with scrutinizing on minute details and working to give a touch of perfection, Berg met with success and the film was a runaway hit.
