Socks and Leggings

Socks and leggings initially were introduced for the purpose of protecting our feet and legs against cold climate and external dirt but now they have graduated to much more than just daily necessities and specifically the leggings have presently become an important part of the fashion trends. Theydeserveit offers an interesting account about the usage and importance of socks and leggings in daily life.

A knitted garment for covering our feet are better known as socks and they also tend to give a protective foot rest while you wear your shoes and specifically the sneakers or boots etc. Socks are also worn with open-toed shoes like sandals. In fact while indoors the socks can be worn without shoes. Another variation of socks is the half-sock which leaves the forepart of your feet visible. Usually socks are made from cotton, wool, or polypropylene, and from nylon which is not so common as a sock material. Socks generally come in many colors though mostly for formal wears the black, blue, white or gray colored socks are more in use. This helps us distinguish between teams.

Mostly the sock levels vary from ankle-high to knee level and athletes generally wear their socks below-the-knee like in baseball, soccer, football, and basketball. Extra-long socks are worn by Sport fencers which reach above the knee. A toe sock is also known as a digital sock while few other styles of socks are crew socks, mid-calf, and bare socks. Ankle socks also known as no-show socks and low cut socks have become popular for wear at secondary schools and with athletic shoes, especially by teenagers.

Many popular designers known for their sock designs are the British designer Paul Smith, Ted Baker, and American designer Gene Meyer and Travis Barker has launched his own line of socks. John Lewis, Selfridges, House of Fraser, and Harvey Nichols are the leading socks retailers in UK while the leading UK socks producing companies are Marks & Spencers, Sock Shop and Next.

Leggings are mostly meant for covering the legs and they come in several sorts of fitted clothing. Originally leggings used to be two separate garments, for each leg. Leggings nowadays signify the tight, form-fitting trousers that extend from the waist to the ankles and they are sometimes also referred to as tights. The modern leggings are made by blending lycra, with either nylon, cotton or from a blend of cotton-polyester and from wool, silk, and various synthetic fabrics. In the Renaissance period men wore leggings. Native Americans wore separate leggings of buckskin leather.

Currently leggings have gained in popularity as aerobics garments and became fashionable gym-styled street wear for women. Formerly soldiers were also known to have worn leggings for ankle support. Leggings in the version of skin-tight trousers, which is a tighter version of the capris tend to end at mid-calf or near ankle length, became a major fashion accessory in the 1960s and came to be worn with a large belt and slip-on high heels or ballet flat-styled shoes.

Leggings are made from blend of nylon-lycra and cotton materials too. Cotton-lycra or cotton-polyester-lycra leggings are worn for fashion mostly and they come in colors of, black, navy, and various shades of gray. 2005 saw leggings coming back in the fashion scenario paired with mini skirts and they were merged with denim style leading to skinny jeans.
