starvation as the Thanksgiving Day. Governor William Bradford proclaimed it as Thanksgiving Day and had then shared the feast with the colonists and the neighboring Native Americans. Since then the tradition of Thanksgiving Holiday has continued.
However there are many controversies surrounding it being proclaimed as a holiday. In 1789 when President Washington proclaimed it as the National Holiday there were not many who opposed Thanksgiving being regarded as a holiday. The disagreement was mainly in the colonies. They thought that the hardships of a few pilgrims were not enough to proclaim Thanksgiving as a holiday.
Later President Jefferson thought the idea of having Thanksgiving Day as ridiculous. It was Sarah Joseph Hale who fought for the cause and rested until in 1863, President Lincoln proclaimed the last Thursday in November as a National Day of Thanksgiving.
In the year 2006 Thanksgiving falls on the 23rd of November. Americans wait for this great day with eagerness. Thanksgiving 2006 is also being looked forward to by millions to enjoy the traditional turkey and pumpkin pie and definitely the family togetherness.
