The music we are enjoying in the 21st century has its root in the late 20th century. The genre of Rap, Hip-hop, R'n'B, Drum'n'Buss made people dance. The era saw the evolution of some great energetic dance forms to suit that kind of music.
Breakcore is a kind of electronic music evolved out of a number of other styles, such as |

industrial, hardcore-techno, jungle and the predominant features of IDM. Speed, intense sonic density, gives much complexity to it. Maybe because of that reason the style and the performers are more judged by their attitude than by their performance. It is believed that breakcore in its earliest form came from London, Berlin and Australia. Only then it grew famous worldwide. Different ideas have been infused into the genre with time made it richer.
Hip-hop made its mark in the 80s. But it came in a big way in the 90s. Rap is nothing but a part of it. Rap swept away the heart of specially the black people of America. It is said that rap was initiated by the downtrodden in the US to speak out the truth against the social system. The form blended with punk, heavy metal and electra made inroads beyond the black domain. From its early focus it has deviated a lot, but its primal focus is entertainment. Among various sub-genre of Rap, Gangsta-rap is the weirdest. Often the band members themselves are gangsters. The genre was welcomed by Ice-T, N.W.A, MC-Eiht and the groups which were the votary of the hardcore rap of Schoolly-D. According to Gangsta-rappers the form is the mirror image of the society. Jay-Z and Nas had a stiff competition between them in the 90s. Fortunately both of them survived and moved the audience. Eminem who was credited as the "most credible white rapper" was never very easy to understand. .
The 90s was the era when women musicians plunged into the world of urban music in a bigger way. Missy Elliott along with Timbaland gave hip-hop a new turn, while in New York, Mary J Blige created a new form, i.e.-Hip-Hop soul.
British Hip-Hop deviated to some extent from its American counterpart. The UK derivatives of the form like Trip-hop, Grime got popularized in a bigger way than the original form. Despite the fact Garage has never been able to attract so many people it has represented the urban life in a big way. Grime is another form that deserves mention.
Drum 'n' Bass and Jungle are the invention of the 80s and90s. The manic way and up-tempo became the credo of the 20th century.
If 70s saw the emergence of Disco and 80s brought Disco-punk into vogue, then 90s must be called the era of Hip-Hop. It's full justice to its name it is still reining as the leading dance form.
