Belly has been considered for long to be an Arab woman's cup of tea. The age old notion is changing now. Even in USA people enjoy the art of belly dance. But its origin definitely lies in the deserts of the hot middle-east. Belly Dance is known by different names in different countries. In Europe it is known as Oriental Dance while in Turkey it has the name, "oriental dansi". Both the words mean "Dance of the East". In the country of Arab where it is the most popular, it has the name, "Raqs Sharqi" or "raqs Baladi".
It is evident that the dance form is not merely an art form. But it has a quality of working wonder on the fat accumulated around the abdominal region. Not only that, during the performance it is the complete exercise to the whole body, which can help in toning the body. A sixty minutes practice of the dance can burn 330 K.calories. It's not a matter of joke. Any organization can include this form of exercise to its weight loss programme which can even strengthen and give flexibility to the abdominal muscle.
Usually the music which is used for belly dances is adopted from the Arabian tunes. Belly dance has its origin in the barren deserts of Arab. But some consider it to have originated in Egypt. The instruments conventionally used as the accompaniment were oud, nay (the Arabian Flute), Qanum (Middle-Eastern Piano) and Kamandze. Apart from these Rebab (Middle-Eastern Violine) is also used. The percussions mostly used as accompaniment are Reqq and tambourine. Of late, arabbouka has started being used with the dance form.
Raja Zahr, the well known composer of American-Lebanese origin, who is regarded as the master in infusing the East into West, has a pretty good collection in his album "Music For Bellydance". The album is especially prepared keeping in mind the needs of the belly dancers; numbers varying from tempo, moods and rhythm. he modern belly dance which has deviated from the orthodox origin can have the right mode of accompaniment in these numbers, which is ideal for both the slow and fast moves of belly dancing. Usually the dance form goes well with slow, moderate or fast tempo of music. Solo music with drum beats can create a magic for belly dancing. The form is based on the 4/4 and 9/8 rhythm.
Belly dance is a form of dance which has created waves in the middle-East. However, such is the charisma of this dance form that in a very short time it took the world by storm.
