"I think music in itself is healing. It's an explosive expression of humanity. It's something we are all touched by. No matter what culture we're from, everyone loves music." That is William Martin Joel known to the world as Billy Joel. Billy Joel Music displays a blend of two distinct eras that led him to stardom in the late '70s and '80s, as he racked a notable string of multi-platinum albums and hit solos. Inspired by the Beatles on The Ed Sullivan Show in 1964, |

Joel decided to go for a full-time musical career and joined the Echoes in 1964. In the year 1967, he teamed up with the Hassles, who had a contract with United Artists. After the Hassles broke up in 1969, Joel and the Hassles drummer, Jon Small, formed an organ and drums duo called Attila. But after the release of a self-titled album in 1970, Attila promptly broke up.
He returned to the music scenario in 1971 as a singer-songwriter, and released his solo debut album entitled "Cold Spring Harbor" on the Ripp label in November of that year.
Columbia Records in '73 signed Joel and "Piano Man" was released by year's end and was certified gold. Although this album is best known for its autobiographical title track, several other melodies include "Captain Jack," "The Ballad of Billy the Kid," and "You're My Home". Billy Joel's "Streetlife Serenade (1974) with the standout track on the album "The Entertainer" did well. It found its place at No. 35 on Billboard's album chart and also merited gold status.
Although his third album "Turnstiles" was a commercial disappointment, his next album "The Stranger"made this piano man a superstar. "The Stranger" garnered him Grammy for Album of the Year and Song of the Year, for the number "Just the Way You Are", which became his highest charting song to date in the United States. In October 1978, 52nd Street followed and gave Joel his first chart topper. On the strength of tracks like "My Life", "Big Shot," and "Honesty.", "52nd Street" became Joel's first # 1 album.
"Glass Houses" became his third consecutive multi-platinum seller and also provided Joel with his first chart-topping single"It's Still Rock and Roll to Me." 1981's "Songs in the Attic", a live recording consisting of songs Joel had written in his earlier days peaked at No. 8 and sold a million.
After a serious motorbike accident and the commercial disappointment of "The Nylon Curtain", "An Innocent Man" (1983) placed Joel back in the rank of multi-platinum seller. The album's songs were a tribute to the golden years of early rock and roll and doo-wop music, and went on to sell over five million copies. With the single "Modern Woman" from the soundtrack of the 1986 comedy Ruthless People, Joel stayed firmly in Top 10. With albums like "The Bridge", "Stromfront" and "River of Dreams", Joel created a stir in the music world and carved out a place for him in the history of music.
