At a time when pop was heavily influenced by dance music and pop-metal, Guns N' Roses changed the landscape of dominant hard rock and heavy metal with gritty, ugly rock and roll that was dirty yet honest. Founded in Los Angeles in June 1985, Guns N' Roses' infused raw energy into the very popular heavy metal music with the help of |

punk, blues, thrash, and other genres of music. Guns N' Roses was founded by singer Axl Rose and guitarist Tracii Guns as an informal merger of their previous bands named Hollywood Rose and L.A. Guns. respectively. Later guitarist Izzy Stradlin, bassist Duff McKagan, and drummer Robbie Gardner joined the group and formed Guns N' Roses. The much rocking name of the band came from a combination of Guns and Rose' pseudonymous last names. However, Tracii and Robbie could not attend the Guns N' Roses' first show in Seattle. They were replaced by the guitarist Slash and drummer Stephen Adler, thus finalizing the original line-up for the band.
In late 1986, the band released a self-produced EP titled Live ?!*@ Like a Suicide. The album featured two original compositions the punk anthem "Reckless Life" and the classic rock inspired "Move to the City" along with covers of Aerosmith's "Mama Kin" and Rose Tattoo's "Nice Boys". The songs tell tales of sex, drugs, and apathy in the big city. A contract with Geffen records made the band taste their first commercial success; the following year, Guns N' Roses released their debut album entitled "Appetite for Destruction". The album featured their breakthrough hit "Sweet Child O Mine" which rocked the whole world.
"G N' R Lies" released in 1988 was Guns N' Roses' next release which hit #2 on the music charts. It featured the controversial song "One in a Million", which included lyrics like "niggers", "faggots", "black bitches" and other disputable utterances. It led to a massive controversy in which critics accused both the band and Axl Rose of racism and homophobia. Shortly after the release of 'G N R Lies', the band's drummer Steve Adler was dismissed, reportedly due to his unwillingness to address his addiction to heroin.
The year 1990 saw Guns N' Roses back in the studio with new drummer Matt Sorum and keyboardist Dizzy Reed to begin work on "Use Your Illusion I" and "Use Your Illusion II". Released on September 17, 1991, "Use Your Illusion I" and "Use Your Illusion II" debuted as #2 and #1 on the charts. Guns N' Roses released a collection of punk covers entitled "The Spaghetti Incident?" on November 23, 1993. It was a moderate success. In 1994, the band was headed for another break up, Gilby Clarke was asked to leave the band as Axl felt his songwriting skills didn't match with their future projects. He was replaced by Slash who drifted in and out of the band for the next year or so before finally quitting in late 1996. In mid 1997, McKagan too copped out of his contract, and officially left the band in early 1998. This left Rose as the sole original member of Guns N' Roses.
In 1998, Axl formally began recording with guitarist Robin Finck, rhythm guitarist Paul Tobias, bassist Tommy Stinson, drummer Josh Freese, keyboardist Dizzy Reed and effects man Chris Pitman. The band released one new song, "Oh My God" in 1999 which was included on the soundtrack of "End of Days". In 1999, guitarist Robin Finck departed the band and Buckethead joined in his place. Drummer Josh Freese was also replaced with Bryan Mantia. In late 2000, Robin Finck returned to Guns N' Roses complementing Buckethead on lead guitar, and the new lineup debuted on stage in January 2001 with two well-received concerts, one in Las Vegas and one in Rio de Janeiro. The year 2002 saw rhythm guitarist Paul Tobias leaving the band, he was replaced by Richard Fortus. After conducting stage shows, the band again witnessed a break up with Buckethead leaving the group. With a history of ruptures and break ups, controversies and drug addictions, Guns N' Roses continues to live.
