Math and Physics Club, Matinee
Seattle's Math and Physics Club released their self-titled debut LP, after two EPs in 2005, Weekends Away and Movie Ending Romance. The tracks are catchy, the lyrics are expressive and the album is flawlessly produced. Pretty good for a debut.
Camera Obscura, Let's Get Out of This Country, Merge
This Scottish group's third album shows that their music has reached new heights of brilliance. They've absorbed a mixture of music pieces, ranging from '50s girl groups to classic country, and combined them with original pop. A definite hit.-into an elegant style of sensitive pop music that's completely their own
Tilly and the Wall, Bottoms of Barrels, Team Love
Absolutely independent in whatever they do, Tilly and the Wall is a group that fiercely proclaims that it is different and original. They lay their emphasis on rhythm and their lyrics, written from the point of view of recluses, are honest and frank. Their second attempt, this album gives them a musical high. Beautifully done, the album is a topper.
Casiotone For the Painfully Alone, Etiquette, Tomlab
An offering from the one-man-synth band, Etiquette offers wonderful lyrics that have been beautifully performed. The production is also extremely well done. Tightly arranged, the humorous but gloomy songs are well set, and sung by capable singers at places where Owen Ashworth falls short. The album is a good one.
Pants Yell!, Recent Drama, Asaurus
Part of the "East Coast pop renaissance", Pants Yell! have a flair for witty but reticent tracks, that are peppy, catchy and have a pop 'n' roll kind of touch. Recent Drama offers a refined, version of their musical abilities, and in that, promises that this group has much more to offer.
Pipas, Sorry Love, Long Lost Cousin
This album offers a very unique sort of sound - something like softly whispering a secret. They specialise in a dance-pop sort of sound, that can be used for dancing, is appropriate for a falling-in-love situation, as also for contemplating past deeds. Truly different, and exquisite.
Irene, Apple Bay, Labrador
An energetic and youthful work, this album contains wonderful tracks sung by a polished artist with a great voice. Capturing just one mood throughout, that of short-term crushes that might not ever take on the form of lasting love, the album is a pretty promising one.
Casey Dienel, Wind-Up Canary, Hush
An impressive debut, Dienel's album is a work that clearly brings out her view of life. All rosy, and full of bright rainbow-hues, the tracks reveal a lot of emotion, and are very well executed. Absolutely great for a debut!
The Snow Fairies, Voila!, Snow Fairies
Full of spunk, and sharp lyrics, is the best (and final) album by the group. Great tunes are created, the harmonies are beautifully crafted, and the songs are absolutely well-done. A fitting and conclusive proclamation by a group that had the potential to deliver more.
Sprites, Modern Gameplay, Darla
This album uses a very pro-rock sound to deliver songs on absolutely mundane matters like video games, science fiction movies, computer programming, and love. The songs are peppy, catchy and absolutely hummable. A good effort, and highly recommendable.
