Steven Bernstein's Millennial Territory Orchestra, Sunnyside
A classic album that revisits the greatest hits of the past with a fusion of modern tracks. Soul masterpieces like "Signed, Sealed, Delivered", and "Darling Nikki" are included in this album. The group plays with boisterous energy, and the tracks are well done. All in all, a good album to listen to
NelsCline, New Monastery, Cryptogramophone
An album coming from a 'different' jazz group, Cryptogramophone has both amazing solos as well as surprising arrangement pieces. Comprising of such great musicians like the guitarist Nels Cline, clarinetist Ben Goldberg, cornet player Bobby Bradford, accordion player Andrea Parkins, bassist Devin Hoff and drummer Scott Amendola, the album offers a great time to anybody who loves jazz.
Ornette Coleman, Sound Grammar
Unconventional is one term that has consistently tagged alongside jazz artist Ornette Coleman. Sound Grammar is no different. His teammates are Denardo Coleman, his son, on the drums, and Greg Cohen and Tony Falanga on the bass. The album has some original tracks, the best being "Once Only", as also some remakes such as "Turnaround" and "Sleep Talking". In short, an album with much potential.
Miles Davis, The Legendary Prestige Quintet Sessions, Prestige/Concord
A total reissue of Miles Davis' four-five great albums of delicate and at the same time daring trumpet playing, this album is surely not to be missed. The album is beautifully made, with no artificial openings, or left out pieces. Highly recommended for fans of the genius.
Dave Douglas, Meaning and Mystery, Greenleaf
Playing with at least six jazz groups, trumpeter Dave Douglas knows the different modes that jazz can assume. This album is from his quintet and features Uri Cain on the electric piano, and new star Donny McCaslin on tenor. Time and harmony are beautifully arranged, and the music is fresh and bright. Pretty good for leisurely listening. v
Edsel Gomez, Cubist Music, Zoho
A modern jazz album, it has Edsel Gomez, Don Byron and David Sanchez on the piano, and Miguel Zenon, Greg Tardy, and Steve Wilson playing the reed. Each soloist plays with passion and fire, with a musical motif running throughout the work. In short, an astonishing and enlightening album.
Mark Helias and Open Loose, Atomic Clock, Radio Legs Music
Performed by a jazz trio - Tony Malaby's tenor, Mark Helias' acoustic bass, and Tom Rainey's drums - without any chord accompaniments, the album scores with the way the three smoothly combine their parts, without any ruckus or disorder. Each artist changes the way he plays according to the mood of the tune, and is ultimately a good album to listen to, without even one dull moment in it.
Vijay Iyer and Rudresh Mahanthappa, Raw Materials, Savoy Jazz
An album from two Indo-American jazz musicians, with Iyer on the piano and Mahanthappa on the alto saxophone. Upbeat and light playing combined with perfection and poise, makes the tunes merge beautifully. A good and sincere combination, the two men have an amazing connection. Great album.
Pat Metheny and Brad Mehldau, Metheny Mehldau, Nonesuch
Absolutely exceptional, this album combines the pop-jazz sounds of Pat Metheny and the lucid performances of pianist Brad Mehldau. Comprising of all original tunes, there are solos as well as arranged pieces, both of which are exquisitely done. A promising album that is a must-hear.
Wayne Horvitz Gravitas Quartet, Way Out East, Songlines
A fusion of jazz and classical music, the album tries hard to be daring in its conception of music and the compositions. However, it falls short of target, as do most albums that try to combine classical and jazz. Bold, but not quite beautiful, it can be listened to as experimental music.
