"We do this basically for ourselves. People appreciate it, which is cool, but I think they appreciate that we're doing it for ourselves. We're doing it our way, and how people like it is not up to us. We like it." This is the American heavy metal band Metallica which brought alternative to clichés in the arena of music. Metallica was responsible for

bringing music back to streets. With unpretentious music, Metallica was simply a reflection of their times, a statement on the world.

Metallica was formed in Petaluma,California, in the year 1981 by James Hettfield and Lars Ulrich. The band got its name when San Francisco based metal promoter Ron Quintana asked Ulrich to suggest a name for his new magazine which would promote U.S. and British metal bands. Though, Quintana came up with "Metallica" but Lars suggested the name "Metal Mania" for the magazine. Later, Lars used "Metallica" for the band he formed with Hettfield.

Metallica really took off by the end of 1981, they played their first headlining gig, replaced their bass player, recorded four demo tapes and had their first appearance on an official record called Metal Massacre. However with the release of 1983's Kill 'Em All marked the beginning of the new era of hard metal. Introducing a breath of complexity and soul to thrash metal, Metallica developed its own style.

With each album, the band developed its musical as well as songwriting skills. Metallica first tasted mainstream success with "Master of Puppets" (1986). To date it is considered as the band's finest work, and the greatest heavy metal album of all time. Inspite of the fact that no singles were released for the album, Metallica received some minor airplay from album tracks "Master of Puppets" and "Welcome Home (Sanitarium)". "Master of Puupets" charted at number 29 on the Billboard Top Album Charts.

On September 27, 1986, during a European leg of shows, tragedy struck the band. Burton was killed in a bus crash on the way to Copenhagen. But the band members didn't let the efforts put in by Burton go waste and carried on. With Burton family's blessings the band sought a replacement and began auditions almost immediately. Jason Newsted joined Metallica on October 28, 1986, three weeks after Burton's funeral.

The group continued to carry on with replacement member Jason Newsted, resulting in such chartbuster releases as 1988's "And Justice for All" and 1991's self-titled release, which established the group as one of the greatest rock bands on the planet.

In the year 1988, "And Justice for All" was released. It was their first first studio album since Burton's death and included some of the band's most structurally complicated music The album also featured their last instrumental to date, "To Live Is To Die", which was a tribute to Cliff Burton as it was based on a number of unused riffs and a poem that the bassist had written. The album also netted the band their first Grammy nomination.

In the year 1991, "Metallica" also known as the "Black Album" was Mettalica's fifth studio LP. Metallica with producer Bob Rocke walks out from the genre of progressive thrash metal they had become known for and chose simplified arrangements with a sound that is commercially accessible. Featuring the singles "Enter Sandman", "Sad But True", "The Unforgiven", "Wherever I May Roam", "Don't Tread On Me", "Through The Never", "Of Wolf And Man", "God That Failed", "My Friend Of Misery", "Struggle Within" and "Nothing Else Matters", The Black Album is a true Classic Album.

After three years of extensive touring to promote "The Black Album", Metallica returned to studio with "Load" (1996). "Load" was intended to be a double album, however it was decided that half of the songs will be released first, and the remaining songs will be released in the following year. This resulted in the band's follow up album entitled Reload (1997). Both "Load" and "Reload" represent a noteworthy musical change for Metallica. Hetfield's vocals took a prominent role than ever before, and songs such as "Mama Said" and "Low Man's Lyric" showed that the band is ready to experiment with varied rhythms and instruments. Many singles from "Load" and "Reload" like "Until It Sleeps", "Hero of the Day", "King Nothing", "The Memory Remains", "The Unforgiven II", and "Fuel" received extensive radio play.

The band suffered another setback with Newstead leaving the band. Robert Trujillo was the replacement for Newstead. In June 2003, Metallica's eighth full-length album "St. Anger", debuted at number one on the album charts. On October 13, 2006 Metallica announced that they will release a DVD featuring all their videos from 1989 to 2004. The DVD will be entitled "The Videos 1989-2004" and will be released on December 4, 2006 worldwide and on December 5 in North America.
