Rock Instrumental Music

Rock Instrumental Music is the style of rock music which lays stress on the use of musical instruments and makes minimalistic use of vocals, and that, if unavoidable. Every sub-genre of rock has its own example of instrumental music, that come from the musicians who focus on that particular style, for instance Dick Dale, Joe Satriani and Steve Vai.

Rock instrumentals were most popular in the early decades of rock and roll music, sometime between the early 50s and 60s. One of the earliest rock instrumentals was Bill Dogget Combo's "Honky Tonk". Earl Bostic, a noted Jazz saxophonist had hit instrumentals like "Harlem Nocturne" and "Earl's Rhumboogie".

Rock Instrumentals could be based on the electric organ or the saxophone, but the most notable and widely used instrument was the 'Guitar'. Some of the hit instrumental tracks that came from these instruments can be listed as follows -

  • The Tornados' "Telstar", and Dave "Baby" Cotez's "The Happy Organ" on the Electric Organ
  • The Champs' "Tequila", on the Saxophone.
  • Duane Eddy's "Rebel Rouser", "Some Kind-a Earthquake", and The Ventures' "Walk Don't Run", "Lullaby of the Leaves" and so on on the Guitar.
The guitar acts of The Ventures were so accurate and perfect that it greatly inspired a number of rock guitarists in the coming ages, and also played a great role in giving shape to Surf Music, which consisted largely of heavy and resonating guitar pieces.

After the British invasion, actually an invasion of rock and roll artists from the UK, especially England, instrumental rock started coming largely from R&B performers. The artists who are most well known in this field are - Booker T, Junior Walker, and the MG's.

Jazz Fusion and Rock had a number of overlapping elements, and certain groups like Return to Forever, and Mahavishnu Orchestra had a huge fan following. Tracks that achieved great popularity were -
  • 'Crystal Silence', 'Spain' by Return to Forever, and
  • 'The Dance of Maya', 'Dream' by Mahavishnu Orchestra.
The 1980s saw the Rock Instrumental scene being ruled by solo guitarists. Some of the most notable guitarists who held sway during this period were -
  • Swedish maestro Yngwie Malmsteen, whose solo album was Rising Force.
  • Joe Satriani, whose Surfing With The Alien astonishingly became a hit album, and contained the popular "Always With Me, Always With You"
  • Steve Vai, who released a number of highly praised solo albums, the best among which is Passion And Warfare
  • Jason Becker, who played with Marty Friedman in Cacophony before going solo and releasing solo ventures such as Perspective, The Blackberry Jams.
There was a growth of instrumental music among Indie-Rock groups, and the Post-Rock groups like Tortoise, Mogwai and Cul de Sac. The 90's also saw Neo-Surf-Rockers like The Mermen and Man or Astro-man? gained immense popularity.

The last few years have witnessed renewed interest in Instrumental Rock, with the comeback of several of the 80s' guitarists like Steve Morse, Marty Friedman, Ron Jarzombek, and Joe Satriani. Some Post-Rock groups have given the world some spectacular Rock Instrumentals such as Godspeed You! Black Emperor, Do Make Say Think, and Explosions In The Sky.

A very noticeable trend these days is the use of Instrumental Rock songs in children's programs on TV, such as the 'Go Go Power Rangers' track of the show Mighty Morphin Power Rangers, and the theme for Dragon Ball Z.
