U2 is famous for its rock concerts worldwide. With the War tour, U2 for the first time began performing to sold-out concerts in mainland Europe and the U.S. The image of Bono waving a white flag during performances of "Sunday Bloody Sunday" became the highlight of the event. indoor arenas for the first time. U2 participated in the Live Aid concert at Wembley Stadium to help save lives of people in Ethiopia. The show had more than a billion spectators worldwide. The band was headlined with 22 other acts which the band members had to carry out in a 15 minute time slot at 5 in the afternoon. But Bono got carried away while performing the version of "Bad" so much so that he not only run over the fifteen minute time slot but also hurdled off the stage to dance with a fan. The Live Aid version of "Bad" is still considered as one of most renowned performances by U2.
The band continued their humanitarian stand with live performances like "Self Aid" with other performers like Van Morrison, Clannad, Elvis Costello, The Pogues and others. The objective of the concert was to address the problem of youth unemployment. The money from the concert money was spent on creating job creation schemes. U2 was again in the headlines for their A Conspiracy of Hope Tour for Amnesty International in the year 1986. The tour was organized to give a greater awareness of Amnesty International's function as an organizational unit in promoting political organizations to disclose the truth. The phrase "A conspiracy of hope" was liked by the masses as well as the band members as Bono once said "I really like the phrase and I really hope it could be applied to U2 and its organization. It applies to the way we do our work; it's whatever you do if you can just do it with a bit of dignity".
The band went for The Joshua Tree Tour in 1987 to promote their new album "The Joshua Tree". The tour sold out stadiums around the world and the tickets for shows were often very difficult to get, especially on the first American leg when they only played in arenas. After an 18-month hiatus from touring, U2 went on the Lovetown Tour with special guest B.B. King. The band visited Australia, New Zealand and Japan. During the tour, Bono announced at a concert in Dublin that it was time "to go away and just dream it all up again", thus propelling speculation from both public and media that the band would split up.
The Zoo TV Tour of U2, which spanned 1992 and 1993 was a multimedia event, displaying a mystifying but extravagant array hundreds of video cameras, upside-down flying Trabant cars video screens, satellite TV links, mock transmission towers, subliminal text messages, and far from usual stage characters like "The Fly", "Mirror-Ball Man" and "(Mister) MacPhisto".
With the following Popmart Tour, U2 carried on with the Zoo TV theme of decadence. The tour began in April 1997 and grabbed a lot of media attention for its extravagant outlook. The set featured a huge 150 foot long video screen, a 100-foot tall golden yellow arch and a 40 foot tall mirrorball lemon. One of the stops in the tour was in Sarajevo, where the band became the first major group to perform after the war. The Popmart Tour was the second-highest grossing tour of 1997 with revenues of just under $80 million.
With The Elevation Tour, U2 returned to arenas, performing in a scaled-down setting after nearly a decade of stadium productions. The 9/11 attacks nearly led U2 to cancel the last third of the tour but they decided to continue their tour. The singles from their new album "Walk On" and "New York" earned added resonance. The Elevation Tour ended up as the top concert draw in North America in the year 2001, drawing in more than $143 million in ticket sales.
Next in the line - up was the Vertigo Tour to promote their album "How To Dismantle an Atomic Band". The tour was able to draw in $260 million in 90 sold-out concerts in the year 2005, making it the top-grossing tour of the year.
