Desert Plants

Deserts are the most barren lands under the sun. Hardly any kind of vegetation can be expected to be found in desert lands. But to the utter astonishment of botanical science, a few plants have the capability of surviving in the most hostile conditions. Those plants are the desert plants. Deserts remain almost barren through out the year due to lack of rain or any source of water.

Sand can not keep the storage of water. That is why when it rains for a very short interval, the water is sucked in by sand of desert. Plants grown in the desert regions have the capability to make storage of water inside their body. They have special storage for the prolonged summer without rain. The leaves of these desert plants are of particular shape to check a lot of evaporation on sunny days.

  • Apache Plume:
  • Fallugia paradoxa

All the 4 deserts at the Southwest of North America, viz. Mojave, Chihuahuan, Great Basin and Sonoran are the native land of Apache Plume desert plants. Southeastern California, southern Colorado, southern Nevada, New Mexico, west Texas, Arizona and northern Mexico are the other native places for this desert plant.
Pebbly and rocky slopes, roadsides, dry washes and highlands from 4,000 to 8,000 feet of height are the best places for the growth of this desert plant.
The rounds, white flowers, with yellow centers are barely 1" to 2" wide. The time between April to June is regarded to be the time for the blooms. These shrubs have leaves throughout the year. This plant is basically a variety of Rose Family. Matured plants are of almost 6 feet. The small grayish, downy leaves of these plants are pinnately divided into horizontal divisions, attached alternately on a sleek, soft stem.

  • Brittlebush
  • Encilia farinosa

Mojave and Sonoran deserts at the south-eastern of California, from Nevada to south-western Utah, western Arizona and northwestern Mexico are the native places of Brittlebush. Dry slopes and desert washes are the ideal places for Brittlebush desert plants.
Bright yellow flowers of these desert plants bloom during the time from March to June. Clustered flowers grow 2 to 3 inches wide in loose branches. Around 8 to 18 rays surround the yellow center disk.
This desert plant is a member of the sunflower family that grows 2 to 5 feet. After growing up these plants form rounded, leafy bush. The silver-gray leaves are long and around1 to 4 inches long. Woody brittle, branches contain an aromatic resin. Native Americans chewed these branches and burn burned as incense in California's churches.

  • Organ Pipe Cactus
  • Stenocereus thurberi

Organ pipe cactus desert plants cover a small area of the Sonoran Desert. The area rests between southwestern Arizona and western Sonora in Mexico. South-facing, hot, sunny slopes are the ideal place for the growth of these desert plants. Lavender-white flowers of Organ pipe cactus desert plants are around 2 and a ½" long. These flowers bloom from May to July, but only at night.
These varieties of columnar desert cactuses are considered to be the second largest desert cactuses in the U.S. These desert plants have a cluster of 5 to 20 slender branches instead of a central stem. The aerosols in the plant are set closely bound together. 9 or 10 brown, 3/8-inch radial spines attach those aerosols together.
Fruits of this desert plants lose their spines after getting mature. There is an edible red pulp inside the fruit. This fruit used to provide a food source to Native Americans. The pulp can be eaten raw or in the form of jelly or can be fermented to make a beverage.
