House plants

A houseplant is mostly a tropical or semi-tropical plant which can be grown in places like home and offices. They are also commonly grown for decorative purposes and for improvement in health conditions for indoor air purification. One needs to care a lot for the house plants and consider the aspects of moisture, light, soil mixture, temperature, humidity, fertilizers, potting, and pest control and both under-watering and over-watering are considered to be damaging to a houseplant. One of the best ways to decide if the plant needs water is to check the soil moisture. Theydeserveit briefs you about the various aspects of maintaining and caring for house plants.

The intensity of light a houseplant receives depends on the nearness of the source of light to the plant and most house plants can tolerate normal temperature fluctuations and generally they grow best from 70 degree F to 80 degrees F at night. You can provide them with increased humidity by attaching a humidifier to the heating or ventilating system in the home or by placing gravel trays under the flower pots or containers. Few types of house plants are types of Kalanchoe, Blossfeldiana, daigremontiana Ham. Mother-in-law's tongue, also known as Snake plant, or Bowstring hemp is one such houseplant which can grow in sunshine, withstand dry air and draughts without water but they can be easily killed by over watering and by freezing. Among the house flowers it's important for one to be able to distinguish between the harmful and useful house plants.

Aloe Vera, Burn plant with its biological name Aloe barbadensis is a house plant which is poisonous as the ingestion of the latex can cause a cathartic (purging) reaction by irritating the large intestine. Otherwise it's known for its healing effects for burns cuts and other skin problems. While using Aloe, one should remove the skin and inner layer of yellow juice leaving only the actual gel. The yellow juice, which is more prominent in older plants and this yellow gel, is the primary irritant in the cases of contact dermatitis. The house plant named Mums having the Botanical name Chrysanthemum sp has the poisonous parts of Leaves, stalks and some people may have contact dermatitis due to continued exposure to garden chrysanthemums. Azalea or Rhododendron sp though is a bonsai favorite is mostly poisonous though the degree of poison content is less and kids should be kept away from them.

Kaffir Lily with its botanical name Clivia miniata is having the roots as the poisonous part producing the toxin called alkaloid Lycorine and the most common symptoms of poisoning by this plant are collapse, diarrhea, paralysis, salivation, vomiting. These plants are normally easy to care for plants and tolerate the regular household conditions, though they need good lighting as bloom, non-blooming plants are still visually interesting. Lastly one important fact about caring for your plants is to consider the aspects of proper pot size as a larger pot won't cause root disease due to the excess moisture retained in the soil while on the contrary a small pot will restrict a plant's growth. Pots for house plants come in two types- porous and non porous. Porous pots are mostly clay and recommended as they give better aeration as air passes laterally through the sides of the pot and non-porous pots like glazed or plastic pots hold moisture longer and hence they restrict airflow. Few of the popular types of houseplants are:

  • Asparagus Fern (Asparagus densiflora)
  • Bromeliads
  • Chinese evergreen (Aglaonema)
  • Citrus
  • Dracaenas
  • Ferns
  • Orchids (Orchidaceae), see also Semi-hydroponic for growing orchids
  • Palms
  • Aloe
  • Cactus
  • Daffodils
  • Hyacinth
  • African Violets
  • Bonsai
  • English Ivy
