The lotuses as the earliest forms of known water plants can be conveniently grown anywhere and they come in the shades of pink, red and yellow. They can only be transported from one place to another when they are dormant in late winter or may be in the early days of spring. On the contrary the bog plants which are also known as marginal pond plants and water plants tend to grow in the shallow margins of the pond and they play an important role of adding height and texture to the pond. They mostly need shallow water up to 6 inches depth and a blend of a variety of bog plants in one container produces wonderful results and these plants come in hardy and tropical varieties. Some of the best examples are papyrus, water iris, rushes and reeds, pickerels, carnivorous plants, and canna lilies.
Water hyacinth is one of the most well known types of water plants and its 7 species constitute the genus Eichhornia of the floating perennial aquatic plants known to be a native to tropical South America. Water hyacinths may rise some 1 meter in height with their broad, thick and glossy ovate leaves. Their leaves stay above the water surface and are supported by long, spongy and bulbous stalks above the water surface. These flowers come in mostly lavender to pinkish shades with 6 petals and when they are not in bloom one can mistake them Limnobium spongia or frog's-bit. These invasive yet exotic plants have been introduced in North America, Asia, Australia and Africa while in India one can find them in the backwaters of Kerala and they are known to be invasive as a huge chunk of water hyacinth can conveniently enough chock water bodies.
