Christian Instrumental Music

Christian instrumental music is the kind of music created to be played in churches while the service is in progression. Instrumental music rises above all barriers - religious, language, and cultural. Instrumental worship music allows the seeker to meditate, pray, or simply relax to the soothing, peaceful melodies brought forth through various instruments and artists.

Christian Instrumental Music is also ideal for times of private prayer, and meditation.

Instrumental music used in churches has been a debatable issue for ages. The first two centuries saw a ban on instrumental music in churches, as musical instruments were thought to be associated with pagan ceremonies. Even when musical instruments were used, church Fathers would make sure that they were extremely simple, without any ornamentation, and that they did not drown out the words of the song.

The next millennium however saw a change in church music. Instruments began to be introduced into Christian music, though in moderation. The organ was one of the first instruments to make an appearance on the church music scene and was used to reinforce the tenor part. The sustained and uniform tone helped the choirs in their chanting, and came to be accepted as 'the musical instrument' of the church. Gradually, other instruments were also brought in. The violin, once considered to be fitting only for weddings, came to be increasingly used in prayer songs and sacred music.

In regard to instrumental music, an important thing to be noted was that it was to be used for the sole purpose of supporting and highlighting the holy recitation. It is not meant to exist independently.

By the 16th century, a number of instruments began to be used in church music. Sometimes, musical instruments would be made to perform without any vocal accompaniment. Churches began to increase their stock of musical instruments, and, Sr. Mark's cathedral in Venice was supposed to possess two organs and wind and string "orchestras".

The Church recommends that musical instruments may be used to draw attention to the chant, but may not suppress it. The Church specifically forbids noisy instruments, such as drums, cymbals, castanets and the like. The gramophone or record-player as well as the playing of bands are also prohibited. The piano was one instrument that was barred from the church, however nowadays it is quite popular. Electric guitars and saxophones also are rarely found, and that, only in "progressive" circles.

Some churches believe that music is extremely important in Christian gatherings, as it helps in emotional release. Music is to be used to respond to God, and any musical style that helps in this may be used, whether it is classical, rock, jazz, hip-hop, rap, folk or anything any other form. Any instrument that supports in this may also be made use of, such as trumpets, organs, drums, brass viols, bassoons, clarinets, violins, pianos, flutes, oboes, guitars, pipe organs and barrel organs to name a few.
